Stephanie A. Hinds

Stephanie A. Hinds

The Hinds Family mourns the passing of Stephanie A. Hinds of Loudonville who died peacefully on February 11, 2022 in St. Peter’s Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a short illness.  Born June 17, 1922 to Joseph and Grace Maio of Syracuse, New York.  Predeceased by John C. Hinds, her husband of 74 years, her son John C. Hinds Jr, sisters Jeanette and Anne, and brothers Jame and Joseph.  Survived by daughters Susan (Martin) Friedman of Fredonia, Pennsylvania and Anne Hinds of Boca Raton, Florida and her son James (Cathy) Hinds of Delmar, New York. Also survived by grandchildren Lisa (Brian) Edge, Molly (David) Barsic, Anne Friedman, Alex Hinds, Laura (Dylan) Steyer, Samantha, Shawna and Sawyer Bilton, and great-grandchildren Natalie, Caitlin and Luke.

Stephanie grew up on the north side of Syracuse where she met her future husband.  She graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1943 and taught in a one room schoolhouse after graduation.  She spent many years raising her family as her husband’s career took her to the New York City suburbs and eventually to Albany, New York.  She resumed her teaching career once her children had grown, becoming credentialed as a special education teacher and working for the Board of Cooperative Education Services, for many years at the Forts Ferry School in Latham, New York.  Many of the children and their parents remained in touch for years after their contact with Stephanie.

To her family she was a strong presence, well known for her words of encouragement and wisdom.  Her children and grandchildren frequently quoted her aphorisms:  “life is not one big happy”; “you’ve got to take the bitter with the better”; “you don’t marry a person, you marry a family”.    Stephanie was deeply religious, as a congregant of St. Pius X in Loudonville for more than 50 years.  She took great pride in her Italian heritage, was a voracious reader and enjoyed feeding backyard birds, summers with her family on Brant Lake, and bus trips to Atlantic City. Her grandchildren will cherish memories of her constant love, support and laughter.

Arrangements are provided by the Daniel D Purcell Funeral Home Troy, NY . A private burial will be followed by a memorial mass later this Spring.  The family wishes to thank the wonderful care provided to Stephanie by the staff of Peregrine Shaker Senior Living, where Stephanie spent the last several months of her life.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stephanie’s name to the Wildwood Foundation,  www.wildwood.edu, 2995C Curry Road Extension, Schenectady, NY 12303.
