Alice Ruth Swertinski (née Kagel), passed away July 6, 2026, a day after celebrating her 92nd birthday surrounded by family. Born in Johnsonville, she was the daughter of the late Carl William Kagel and the late Theresa Kagel and the wife of the late Joseph Swertinski.

A graduate of Hoosick Falls High School, she had been employed at John Hancock Life Insurance and then became a stay-at-home mother. Alice returned to work at Samaritan Hospital, retiring after 41 years of employment. She was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Troy where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and the Parish Council, served as president of the Women's Club, was a Eucharistic Minister, chaired the Bishop's Appeal for many years and was involved in other ministries. Alice was also a member of Sycaway Seniors, Birchkill Arts and Crafts, Brunswick Historical Society, Ladies of Charity, Hoosick Grange, St. Mary's Auxiliary, Ilium Literary Club, and Troy AARP 3991. She loved going to the theater and was a longtime supporter of the Mac-Hayden Theater in Chatham. Alice was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a thoughtful and generous woman whose pies (especially apple!) were her trademark.

Survivors include a daughter, Theresa Kimball and her husband Bill; her grandchildren, Christine and Eva Compisi, Dr. William Kimball, and Elizabeth and Ryan Bailey; four great grandchildren, Alice and Elle Compisi, and Liam and Grace Bailey; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret Kirch; her brothers, Herman, George, and Arthur Kagel; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, meals, treats, visits, calls, cards, text messages and concern these last three months, especially St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Wilmette, IL and JourneyCare Hospice.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 14 at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Troy where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by The Rev. Winston Bath and The Rev. John Yanas. Relatives and friends are invited to call at Sacred Heart Church from 10:00-11:30 a.m. prior to the Mass. Interment will be in Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, on Wednesday, July 15 at 11:30 a.m., with prayers led by The Rev. Nadia Stefko.
