John C. Redcross

John C. Redcross (80) passed away on Father’s Day, June 19, 2022.  John was born in Troy, NY, on August 1, 1941, to Catherine Eates and Arnold Redcross. Beloved husband to Mary Beth (Branigan) Redcross.

John graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1965 with a degree in engineering.  He then served over four years in the United States Navy, spending much of his service on nuclear submarines, and ultimately earning the rank of Lieutenant, an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and a National Defense Medal.  John then worked for General Electric as an electrical engineer, and later for Knolls Atomic Power Lab (Lockheed Martin and Bechtel), designing and performing electrical engineering work for U.S. Government projects.  John retired several years ago, and then came out of retirement to continue his engineering work for Knolls Atomic Power Lab through 2022.

John had a hunger for learning, and often spent his free time reading particle physics textbooks, solving equations, and studying WWII.  John loved travelling, spending time with his large family, running on nature trails, and watching SciFi movies.  John was a devout Catholic, regularly attending mass at St. Williams Church, Sacred Heart Church, and St. Anthony’s Church.

John passed with a full room of family by his side, showering him with love.   John is survived by his wife Mary Beth, eight children: Michael Redcross (Brenda), Anne Redcross Beehler (Ken), Kathleen Armenia (Rich), Frank Armenia (Eileene), Jim Armenia (Gabrielle), John Armenia (Connie), Tony Armenia (Kim), and Michael Armenia (Margaret), his brother Carl Redcross, and sixteen grandchildren: Matt, Chris, Madeline, Rachel, Andrew, Margaret, Theresa, Olivia, Seamus, Sarah V., Jacob, Joey, CJ, Anthony, Sarah A., and Zachary.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for John, Monday June 27th at Sacred Heart Church, Spring Street at 10 am. Family and friends are invited to visit with John’s family in the Daniel D. Purcell Funeral Home, 510 Pawling Avenue, Troy on Sunday June 26th 4-6pm. Interment will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Colonie.

Dear Mary Beth,
My heart goes out to you and your family for your loss. I remember John as a smart, interesting, soft spoken and caring man. The memorial video was a beautiful tribute. I wish you and your family strength and comfort at this difficult time.

Dear Mary Beth, family and friends of John,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at John´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor in the U.S. Submarine Force.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Mary Beth and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
