Michael G. McCartin

May 2, 1966 — July 18, 2025

Michael G. McCartin, passed away at the age of 59. Born on May 2, 1966, in Troy, New York, Michael was the beloved son of Joseph Vincent McCartin and Marybeth Maier McCartin. Michael grew up in the Catholic working-class milieu known as Eastside Troy. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and then graduated from Catholic Central High School. He attended Hudson Valley Community College for a year, then earned his undergraduate degree from SUNY Binghamton. Then he went on to receive his Juris Doctor from SUNY Buffalo School of Law. Following law school, Michael was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, where he served with honor and distinction in the Judge Advocate General Corp (JAG). He spent most of his service in San Diego, California, where many fond memories of his can be found. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and embraced the "trial by fire" tactics that the Navy offered. In addition, he honed his legal skills during a time when JAG gained even more prominence due to a certain movie starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson.

After his military service, he continued his work as a trial and appellate attorney for the United States Department of Justice in both San Diego and the Washington, D.C. area. Then, in late 2001, he returned to the Capital Region, where he dedicated over two decades of his career as an Assistant Attorney General for the New York State Office of Attorney General. An accomplished litigator, he spearheaded numerous important cases and achieved remarkable success, taking countless cases to winning jury verdicts or summary judgment. Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. McCartin received numerous awards for his skill and outstanding public service, including three Louis J. Lefkowitz Awards. He also enjoyed mentoring and helping younger attorneys in the office. Michael retired from public service at the end of 2023.

Michael was incredibly proud of his two sons, Jack (Ali Galus) and Mike McCartin, who survive him. It can be said that both sons inherited his stubbornness, work ethic, and love of fishing. He is also survived by his siblings-Joseph, Anne, Marybeth, Jude, and James-and their families, who reside near and far across the East Coast, along with cousins, nephews, and nieces. In addition, he held a special bond with his cousin, Margo Boos Derham, whom he considered another sister within the family. Michael was predeceased by his parents and many other relatives whom he loved. He was very proud to be Catholic and an American. Last but not least, he loved to fish at Schroon Lake or any of the lakes around Averill Park. Pop, we will go fishing again-like the good old days. Rest easy for now...
