John A. "Jack" Countois, 83, of Wynantskill, surrounded by his family, was called home to eternal life on May 26. Born and raised in South Troy and later Wynantskill, Jack grew up surrounded by family. In storybook fashion, the Troy High football player married his favorite cheerleader and they spent 63 wonderful years together.
Jack's most proud accomplishment was the family he created. Left to mourn his loss are his wife Sandy Mealy Countois, his children Chris (John) Cooney, Jeff (Jill) Countois, and Melissa (Dennis) Weatherwax and children by choice; Mitchell (Susan) Paurowski and Nicole (Jack) Dwyer. Jack is also loved by his grandchildren Meghan (Dan), Lauren (John), Sam, Hannah, Rielly, and Sadie as well as his great-grandchildren Anthony, Charlotte and Christian who brought joy into his life every day. Jack is also survived by much loved cousins with whom he shared many memories.
Jack proudly served in the Army National Guard, was employed by Albany Felt and retired after 35 years as an administrator at GE Silicone in Waterford. Since retiring, Jack spent countless hours tracing the intricate threads of family lineage, uncovering tales of triumph and adversity that spanned generations in both his and Sandy's families, tying into his love of history. He loved a challenge and there was rarely a problem, anything broken or a project he couldn't fix. He also coached community basketball and football teams as well as his children's Twin Town and Classie Lassie teams. Jack was the biggest fan at his grandchildren's events. Jack cherished every moment spent with his family; from camping trips, vacations to Maine, time at the lake or simple gatherings at home, he reveled in the company of his high school sweetheart, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. His unconditional love and support created a bond that will endure for eternity.
Throughout his life, Jack exemplified strength, love, and unwavering support for his family. Through faith in his Lord and Savior, he faced his final days with confidence, peace and his sarcastic sense of humor. His wisdom and love will be cherished and missed by his family.
The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Farooq for his outstanding medical care and compassion, the North Greenbush ambulance and the nursing and tech staff in the emergency room and fourth floor at Samaritan Hospital, and Melissa of Community Hospice for their dedication, professionalism, compassion and exceptional care.
Calling hours will be held at Brunswick Presbyterian Church, 42 White Church Lane, Troy from 2:30 to 4:30 on Friday, May 31. A service celebrating Jack's life will be held immediately following calling hours.
